How do you make a karaoke version of a song?

To make a karaoke version of a song, drop it into the karaoke maker and press Make karaoke track. The vocals are taken out and the lyrics are written down with the time of every word. Then set a guide vocal if you want to hear the singer softly, move the key to suit your voice, sing along as the lyrics light up, and download the track as MP3 or WAV.

A karaoke track in three steps

Drop the song into the karaoke maker, set it for your voice, sing.

  1. Drop the song

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG, WEBM or a music video. The vocals come out and the lyrics are written down at the same time.

  2. Set the guide and the key

Keep a little of the singer as a guide, from off to half the original level, and move the key up or down by up to six semitones.

  3. Sing along

The lyrics light up as the track plays. Download the karaoke track as MP3 or WAV, and the lyrics as LRC.

A karaoke maker built for singers

Everything a singer sets is heard at once in this karaoke maker, and the download is made exactly as you hear it.

A gold glitter musical note hanging on a thread

A guide vocal at your level

Learning a song is easier with the singer softly underneath. Set the guide vocal anywhere from off to half the original level, and the karaoke maker keeps it at that level, in the download too.

Your key, the same tempo

The karaoke maker moves the key down for a lower voice or up for a higher one, a semitone at a time, up to six either way. The tempo stays exactly as it was, so the lyrics stay in time, and the guide vocal moves with the music.

Lyrics that light up as you sing

The karaoke maker writes the lyrics down while it takes the vocals out, timed word by word and grouped into verses and choruses. The line being sung lights up, and a click on any word plays from it.

Lyrics read from the whole song

We tested where lyrics read best on 28 songs made on this site: from the whole mix, 7.6% of words were wrong; from the separated vocals, 9.3%. Chinese songs read about the same either way (21.2% against 20.5%). So the karaoke maker reads the lyrics from the song as it is, while the vocals come out in the same run.

Paste your own lyrics

Have the official lyrics? Paste them, one line of the song per line, and each line is timed to where it is sung. Your lines replace what was heard, and every file afterwards uses them.

MP3, WAV and LRC

Download the karaoke track as MP3 or WAV, with your guide level and key in it. Take the lyrics as LRC for music players, word-by-word LRC for karaoke apps, SRT for a video, or a plain lyrics sheet.

Karaoke maker samples

Each song was written and made for this page, then turned into a karaoke track by this karaoke maker: the vocals out, the guide vocal and key as each card says, the lyrics as heard. Press play, switch between the karaoke track and the original, and sing along.

How to make a karaoke version of a song

A karaoke version needs three things: the music without the singer, the lyrics in time, and a key you can reach. The karaoke maker does all three in one place.

  1. 1Drop the song or its music video into the karaoke maker and press Make karaoke track.
  2. 2Play the karaoke track and set the guide vocal if you want to hear the singer softly.
  3. 3Move the key until the highest line sits comfortably in your voice.
  4. 4Check the lyrics as they light up, and correct a line or paste your own if you need to.
  5. 5Download the karaoke track as MP3 or WAV, and the lyrics as LRC.

Settings are heard at once, so sing a chorus while you set the key.

Finding your key

A song sits in the singer’s range, not always yours, and this karaoke version maker moves it to yours. If the chorus feels strained, move the key down a semitone or two; if the low lines feel too low, move it up. A man singing a song written for a woman, or the other way around, usually sings it an octave lower or higher, and a few semitones either way then fit it to the voice. Six semitones either way reach every key.

The key moves without changing the tempo, so the lyrics stay in time. Each sample card shows the key its karaoke track is in.

Practicing with a guide vocal

In the karaoke maker, the guide vocal is the original singer, kept quietly under the music. At 10 to 20% it is a hint you can sing over; at 30 to 50% you can follow it closely while you learn a new song. Turn it off when you know the song.

The guide is in the download at the level you set, so you can practice on the move.

Lyrics, word by word

The lyrics are written down from the whole song, the way the lyrics transcriber does it. In our test of 28 songs, 7.6% of words were wrong (3.9% in English and Spanish, 21.2% in Chinese, where two rap songs made nearly all the errors). Fast rap and heavy distortion are harder, so check the lines before a performance.

Correct any line in place: it keeps its timing. Or paste the lyrics you have, and each line is placed where it is sung.

Harmonies and backing vocals

This vocal remover karaoke maker takes out every voice, so backing vocals and harmonies come out with the lead. The guide vocal brings them back softly along with the lead, which helps on songs where the chorus leans on them.

A karaoke night at home

Make the tracks before the night, each in the key of whoever sings it. Download each track with its LRC file: they share a name, so a music player that shows lyrics pairs them. Or keep the karaoke maker open and let the lyrics light up as you sing.
