How do you remove background noise from audio?
To remove background noise from audio or video, open the file in the background noise remover, choose Clean and run it: wind, traffic, hum and fans go, and the voice is not rebuilt. Listen to what was removed on its own, set how much noise to take out, and download the audio or the same video with the picture untouched.
How to remove background noise in three steps
Pick the noise, try the first minute, and download when it sounds right.
Open a recording or a video
Drop in an MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC file, or a video such as MP4 or MOV. From a video only the sound goes up, taken out on your device. Files run up to 2 hours.
Say what the noise is
Wind, traffic, hum, a fan, rain, music or other people talking. The noise reducer suggests the right mode for it: Clean for steady and passing noise, Studio voice when people talk close by.
Listen, set and download
Switch between the original, the cleaned sound and what was removed at the same moment, choose how much noise to take out, and download an MP3, a WAV or the video.
A background noise remover you can check
Hear what it took away, choose how much it takes, and keep your own voice, not a rebuilt one.

Hear what was removed, on its own
Next to the original and the cleaned sound, play the removed part on its own: your recording less the cleaned result, lined up sample by sample. It is mostly the noise. Where the noise covered your voice, cleaning also lowers some of the voice, so you hear it there, turned down, more so where the noise is louder. It plays everything the cleaning took out, whatever the amount you set. To check the voice, listen to the cleaned sound; to check every word, run with the transcript comparison on. It is made on your device, at no extra cost.
Take out as much noise as you like, after the run
Total silence behind a voice can sound flat. Set how much noise to remove from 0 to 100% while it plays, and leave a trace of the street or the wind if it fits the scene. Changing it costs nothing, however often you try.
Wind, traffic, hum, fans, rain and crowds
Clean takes away steady noise like hum, fans and air conditioning, passing noise like wind, traffic, sirens, rain and a drill next door, and the distant murmur of a crowd. People talking close by are clear voices too, and for them Studio voice rebuilds the main voice on its own. Pick the noise and the noise reducer suggests the mode.
Remove background noise from video, keep the picture
Drop in an MP4, MOV, MKV or WEBM file. Only its sound goes up, about 14 MB for a 10-minute video. In our test, taking the sound out of a 4 GB, hour-long video took about 50 to 95 seconds in a desktop browser, and only 92 MB was uploaded. The cleaned sound goes back into the same file with the picture copied frame for frame. While you listen, the picture plays along.
Check every word, if you want proof
Turn on the transcript comparison (+3 credits a minute) and the recording is transcribed before and after: every place where the two read differently is listed, lined up by time. Play any place, and keep the original there with one click.
Try the first minute before the whole file
Run the first minute of your own recording and hear the result. If you like it, clean the rest: the minute you heard is reused, so it is never charged twice.
Background noise remover samples: before and after
Each sample is a voice from our library, or a public-domain recording, made noisy on purpose, then cleaned by this background noise remover exactly as it came out. Switch between the original, the cleaned sound and what was removed while it plays.
Background noise removal guide: noise by noise
Wind
Wind on a phone or a camera is one of the most common noises in outdoor videos: low rumbles and bursts that cover words. Clean takes it away without rebuilding the voice. Leave 10 to 20% of the noise in if the scene should still sound outdoors.
Traffic, sirens and trains
Passing cars, a bus, a siren or a train arriving come and go under the voice. Clean removes them along with the steady hum of the street. A horn or a siren right on top of a word may leave a trace; play that place against the original to hear it.
Hum, buzz and static
An electrical hum, a buzzing light or a hiss on the line is steady, which makes it one of the easiest noises to remove. Clean takes it out, and what was removed is mostly that hum.
Fans, air conditioning and fridges
Fans and air conditioners make a steady whoosh that sits under every word of a lecture or a class. Clean removes it; to remove background noise from audio recorded at home, this is usually all it takes.
Other people talking
A café, a station or a trade show fills the background with other voices. Clean takes a distant crowd murmur away as noise, and keeps people talking close by, whose voices are as clear as yours. For those, pick Studio voice: it rebuilds the main voice without them and without the room, at 15 credits a minute. For echo and a voice that sounds far away, the audio enhancer explains the choice in full.
Music under the voice
Both modes take music under the voice away with the noise. To keep a music bed, separate it first with the vocal remover, clean the voice, and put the music back under it.
How to remove background noise from video
Open the video in the background noise remover. Its sound is taken out on your device and cleaned, and you download the same video with the new sound: the picture, the frame rate and the resolution are copied as they are. Pick video loudness (−14 LUFS) for social and video sites.
Phone videos are often vertical; the picture keeps its shape, and only the sound changes.
How much noise to remove
Removing every last trace of noise can make a voice sound close and dry, as if it was recorded in a booth. Start at 100%, then lower it until the place comes back just enough: 80 to 90% suits most vlogs, 100% suits a lecture or a voice memo.
Compare the loudest moment of the noise: that is where a cleaner takes the most. Play the cleaned sound there against the original, and turn on the transcript comparison if every word matters.
Record cleaner next time
Hold the phone or the microphone closer to the mouth than to the noise, turn off fans and air conditioning while you record, and stand with your back to the wind or behind a wall. A few seconds of silence at the start help you hear what the room sounds like.
